As automation streamlines certain operational roles, leading to a reduction of 85 million jobs, the overall employment landscape will experience a net growth of 12 million opportunities. According to a research bulletin by the European Central Bank, the deep learning boom from 2011 to 2019 saw the rise of applications such as language processing, image recognition, algorithm-based recommendations, and fraud detection. Although these applications were not as advanced as the current generative AI models like ChatGPT, they still raised concerns about potential job displacement. However, the study found that occupations with higher exposure to AI-enabled technologies experienced an increase in their employment share across Europe. This suggests that AI-enabled technologies may complement labor rather than replace it, fostering employment growth in Europe, especially for high-skilled professions and younger workers.

The study found, in addition, that AI-enabled automation seems to be more advantageous for occupations that employ relatively younger workers, with the estimated benefits for this group being twice as high as for other age groups. This trend contrasts with evidence from previous technology waves, where computerization reduced the relative share of employment for medium-skilled workers, leading to job polarization.

Furthermore, AI-enabled technologies are expected to have a more significant impact on high-skilled workers. This is because AI-enabled technologies can automate tasks across virtually all occupations, unlike other technologies such as computerization and industrial robotics, which are limited to automating a specific set of tasks by implementing manually defined rules.
