Explainable AI: breaking open the black box of machine learning

Data and algorithms, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) systems have become central to business strategies.

What is “Explainable AI”? Transparency, Interpretability, Explainability

 Enter Explainable AI (XAI): a set of techniques and practices designed to make AI’s decisions understandable, accountable, and trustworthy. But because “interpretability,” “transparency,” and “explainability” are often used interchangeably, it helps to clarify:

  • Transparency
    This refers to the model’s design and structure. A truly “transparent” model allows a human to examine the entire model: its logic, components, parameters, and understand how inputs are transformed into outputs. In practice, full transparency can be achieved for simpler models; for highly complex ones, it may be unrealistic.
  • Interpretability
    This is about human comprehensibility. An interpretable model or decision is one that a human can grasp intuitively: for instance, by seeing how specific input features influence the output.
  • Explainability
    Building upon interpretability, explainability aims to produce clear, coherent explanations for specific predictions or decisions. It answers questions such as “Why did the AI produce this output?” or “Which data points drove this decision?” It draws on fields like human-computer interaction, ethics, and law to provide contextually meaningful explanations.

Approaches to Explainable AI: from white‑box models to post‑hoc explanations

Broadly speaking, there are two main strategies to make AI explainable:

Explanations can be global (overall behaviour, feature influence across many predictions) or local (why a specific prediction was made).

Both paths have trade-offs: white-box models offer clarity but may underperform in complex tasks; black-box models can excel but require extra effort to explain their behaviour.

White Box AI: transparency by design

A crucial concept in the journey toward explainability is the idea of white box AI. These, as we highlighted before, are models whose decision-making processes are transparent and directly interpretable, meaning that a human can easily follow how the system transforms inputs into outputs.

White box models include decision trees, linear regression, and rule-based systems, all designed to make their internal logic visible. 

This built-in explainability makes white box models particularly suitable for high-stakes domains where legal compliance, ethical clarity, and user trust are non-negotiable. They also simplify audit processes and support more focused data governance by making it easier to identify which input features drive predictions.

While they may not always achieve the performance levels of more complex models, white box systems offer a trade-off: slightly lower predictive power in exchange for maximum transparency and accountability.

Why Explainable AI matters, for business, compliance, and trust

  • Building stakeholder trust
    Transparency and explainability reduce the fear of “mystery AI.” When users, customers, or regulators understand how decisions are made, they are more likely to trust and adopt AI-driven tools.
  • Ethical and legal compliance
    For applications affecting individuals (e.g., credit scoring, medical diagnosis, hiring), laws and regulations often require explanations. By enabling auditability and accountability, XAI helps organisations meet obligations under data‑protection regimes and ensure fair, lawful use of data.
  • Data minimisation and privacy-aware design
    With explainability, businesses can better understand which features actually matter for decisions. This can guide more judicious data collection — gathering only what is necessary, reducing privacy risks, and simplifying data governance.
  • Better governance, monitoring, and risk management
    Explainable systems are easier to audit — either internally or by third parties. Decisions can be traced back to data inputs and model logic, enabling oversight and reducing risks of bias, error, or misuse.

Conclusion
